How To repair The Steering In Passenger Vehicles?

STEERING REPAIR ON PASSENGER VEHICLES

The steering system is designed to operate in the same proportion as the steering wheel, rim and wheels, to direct the vehicle and change its mobility.

The system allows the driver to use only light force to steer a vehicle.

Moving four turns from full left lock to full right lock, the edge of a 15-inch (380 mm) steering wheel travels about 5 meters, while the edge of the road wheel moves a little more than 12 meters. If the driver turns the steering wheel directly, it should push about 16 times harder.

The steering acts on the wheels through a system of joints. These are designed to allow the wheels to move up and down with the suspension without changing the steering angle.

It also allows for a sharper opening of the inner front wheel, which has to go around a tight curve when cornering.

The joints have to be adjusted very precisely, and even a little slack in them will make the steering wheel run dangerously sloppy.

There are two steering systems in common use - the rack system and the steering gear.

In large cars, both systems can be power assisted to further reduce the effort required to move, especially when moving slowly in cars.

Rack System

Rack gear

A small pinion (gear wheel) is contained in a housing at the base of the steering column. It is a long transverse rod whose teeth are knitted with a straight row of teeth on a rack.

Turning the pinion moves the rack from side to side. The ends of the rack are connected to road wheels by pallet bars.

This system is simple, a few moving parts may be worn out or displaced so the action it takes is precise.

A universal joint allows the steering column to be attached to the rack without giving a steering angle to the sides.

Steering box system

There are gears in a box at the base of the steering column. It is a worm-like cylinder with short bolt-like gears. Imagine turning a bolt that holds the nut on it; the nut moves along the bolt.

Depending on the design, the vehicle part that is the moving system (such as a segment of the gear wheel) can be a pin or cylinder attached to a fork, or a large nut.

The nut system has hardened balls that run through the thread between many screws and nuts.

As the nut moves, the balls roll back into a tube that takes them back to the start; this is called a recirculating ball system.

The worm-like part moves the drop arm, which is connected with a track arm, to the nearest front wheel and moves it to the steering column.

A central track bar reaches the other side of the vehicle where it is connected to the other front wheel by another track bar and steering arm. A rotated outrigger holds the distal end of the central track arm level. Arm layouts may vary.

The steering box system has many moving parts. Therefore it is less sensitive than racking system, has more room for wear and displacement.

Hydrolic wheel

It is the system that enables the steering system to be turned right or left while changing the movement of the vehicle, allowing the driver to move easily without any effort.

Steering Wheel Repair Process

If all this system is broken and makes it difficult to use, you should have your vehicle repaired. We do this professionally in Nitro Garage.
