24-Volt AC Compressor Failure and How to Repair the Compressor

What Is an AC Compressor?

The AC compressor is the part that compresses and pressurizes refrigerant gas. This system receives its drive from the engine crank pulley and belt.

How Does an AC Compressor Work?

The AC compressor is used to raise the pressure of the refrigerant inside it.

As pressure rises, refrigerant temperature also increases. In other words, refrigerant gas enters and leaves the compressor; cool air goes in and warm air comes out; low pressure enters and high pressure exits.

Types of Vehicle AC Compressors

  1. Piston technology
  2. Scroll technology
  3. Vane technology
  4. Swash-plate compressor (the newest design)

What Are the Symptoms of AC Compressor Failure?

When vehicle climate control fails, the problem may be in the compressor unit or its internal components.

Vehicle AC compressors generally consist of:

  • compressor pulley
  • compressor shaft
  • compressor gas
  • gas inlet
  • piston
  • valves and valve sockets.

When the AC compressor fails, the vehicle air conditioning usually does not engage.

Technicians often solve this by replacing the compressor.

However, the fault can be resolved without replacing the compressor. Test equipment is available to identify compressor faults precisely.

AC compressor test equipment offers significant advantages.

  • Simulation of real in-vehicle operation.
  • Detection of mechanical (knock, vibration) and visual faults (discharge and suction pressure).
  • Real-time monitoring of test results.
  • Load control on a tested unit.
  • Electromagnetic valve control from 0% to 100%.

MS111 AC Compressor Test Bench

MS111 compressor test bench makes it much easier to test faulty compressors.

Repairs can be actively tested as if the compressor were installed on the vehicle.

It is designed to test a wide range of vehicle compressors on R134a refrigerant used in AC systems.

MS111 compressor test equipment detects faults in the vehicle AC unit — including remanufactured, repaired, or used units — before they are mounted on the vehicle.

With this test equipment you can operate the compressor as if it were on the vehicle.

During testing you can view values on the MS111 bench. You can also save and print the readings.
