A/C Compressor Repair: Symptoms, Causes and Fixes

What Is an A/C Compressor?

The air conditioning compressor compresses and pressurises the refrigerant. Driven from the engine by the crankshaft pulley and belt, it is the heart of the cooling system.

An important detail: oil dissolved in the refrigerant lubricates the compressor. In a system that has lost gas, the compressor begins running without lubrication.

Symptoms of an A/C Compressor Problem

  • Noise from the engine bay when the A/C is switched on
  • Whistling or clicking from the compressor
  • Air conditioning not cooling, or not cooling enough
  • Belt squeal while the A/C is running
  • Cooling that cuts in and out

The Complaint Is Not Always the Compressor

Workshop experience shows that a significant share of "A/C not cooling" complaints are not compressor failures. When the pressure sensor reads low, the A/C control unit disables the compressor itself — that is protection, not a fault.

Telling the two apart requires manifold pressure measurement assessed together with live data from the A/C control unit. Condemning the compressor by eye or by ear alone gets healthy parts replaced for nothing.

What Proper Diagnosis Requires

An air conditioning system has both mechanical and electronic sides. Reliable diagnosis needs:

  • A manifold gauge set to measure low and high side pressures
  • A diagnostic tool to read the A/C control unit fault memory
  • Pressure sensor live data compared against the actual measurement
  • Checks on the clutch circuit and supply voltage

Decisions made without these measurements are guesswork, and guessing with air conditioning parts is expensive.

Why Not to Wait

An air conditioning problem left to develop rarely stays limited to one component. If the compressor is damaged internally, debris spreads through the system and the drier, expansion valve and lines must also be addressed — the repair cost multiplies.

Air Conditioning Care

  • Run the air conditioning for a few minutes each month, including through winter; seals dry out and start to leak in an unused system.
  • Have refrigerant and system pressure checked at routine servicing.
  • Do not wait once cooling performance starts dropping.
