A solenoid valve is an electromechanical valve opened and closed by an electrical signal to control fluid flow. It consists of a coil and a spool the coil moves, directing water, oil, steam or gas.
In an automatic transmission its role is critical: solenoid valves determine which clutch receives hydraulic fluid, when, and at what pressure. They are the components that actually execute gear changes.
What Do Solenoids Do in an Automatic Transmission?
The transmission control unit (TCU) decides which gear to select based on speed, throttle position and load. The solenoids carry out that decision:
- Shift solenoids — select which clutch engages
- Pressure control solenoids (EPC) — set how firm or soft the shift is
- Torque converter clutch solenoid (TCC) — engages converter lock-up
Solenoid Failure Symptoms

Why Do Solenoids Fail?
- Dirty or burnt transmission fluid. The number one cause. Metal and friction material in the oil jams the spool.
- Neglected fluid changes. "Lifetime fluid" does not hold up in practice; under hard use the oil degrades.
- Coil failure. The winding goes open circuit or shorts.
- Overheating. As oil temperature rises, viscosity falls and pressure cannot be held.
- Electrical problems. Internal harness and connector faults.
- Wear. At high mileage the spool and bore wear, causing internal leakage.
Diagnostic Order
- Check fluid level and condition. If it is dark or smells burnt, deal with fluid and filter first.
- Read the fault codes. Solenoid circuit codes narrow down which valve is at fault.
- Watch live data. Transmission oil temperature, requested versus actual gear, line pressure.
- Run actuator tests. Trigger each solenoid individually from the diagnostic tool.
- Measure resistance. Compare each solenoid against the manufacturer figure.
Repair
In most cases an individual faulty solenoid can be replaced rather than the whole valve body. But where contaminated fluid is the cause, replacing the valve alone is not enough — fluid, filter and if necessary the valve body must be addressed together.
Important: after replacing a solenoid or valve body, an adaptation (learning) reset must be performed. Skip this and the transmission keeps working to the old worn values, and the complaint returns.
