Vehicle lighting is fundamental to safety at night and in poor visibility. Modern cars have moved beyond halogen to Xenon (HID), LED and laser headlights, offering better illumination, longer life and adaptive features: AFS, automatic levelling and cornering lights.
All of it depends on an electronic unit commonly called the headlight control module — HCM, LCM, or the ballast in Xenon systems.
What Does the Headlight Module Do?
- Regulates power to the headlight units
- Ignites Xenon lamps
- Controls current to LED modules
- Manages adaptive functions: levelling, cornering lights, high beam assist
- Reports faults onto the vehicle network
Failure Symptoms
- Headlight does not light at all
- Flickering or unstable light
- Goes out after running for a while
- Colour shift (pink or purple)
- Levelling not working
- Cornering light not working
- Bulb failure warning on the dashboard
- Only one side working
The Headlight Module Is a Control Unit in Its Own Right
This is often overlooked: the headlight module has its own fault memory, like any other control unit on the vehicle. Whether the problem lies in the bulb, the module, the wiring or the supply can only be established by reading that memory and examining the module's live data.
Deciding by eye that "the light is out, the ballast has failed" is a common and expensive mistake.
What Proper Diagnosis Requires
- Reading the fault memory of the headlight control module
- Assessing the supply and ground reaching the module
- On adaptive systems, checking level sensor and steering angle data
- Seeing whether several modules are reporting faults at once
Coding After Replacement Is Essential
Replacing the module does not finish the job: the new unit must be registered (coded) to the vehicle. Skip that step and the module either does not work at all or keeps reporting a fault. Coding requires brand-appropriate software and equipment.
Looking After the Headlights
- Do not ignore condensation or moisture inside the headlight; it reaches the module and causes corrosion.
- Do not run a Xenon bulb past its life; a weakening bulb overloads the ballast.
- Avoid incompatible LED conversion kits. Non-original bulbs upset the module's current measurement and generate faults.
- Deal with battery and charging problems promptly; voltage fluctuation stresses the module.
