Heavy-Duty Fault Codes: Mercedes Actros and Volvo FH DTC Glossary

Short answer: When a heavy-duty vehicle throws a warning light on the dash, it's backed by a DTC (fault code) in the background. The code tells you which system (engine, ABS, DPF, ESP) has a problem — but to actually read it you need a diagnostic tool like a Mercedes SD Connect, Volvo Vocom or Jaltest. Below are the most common Mercedes Actros and Volvo FH codes, what they mean, and how to diagnose them.

Mercedes Actros Fault Codes

On the Mercedes Actros, faults typically show up as a 4-5 digit code prefixed with a system abbreviation (EDC, ABS, ESP, DPF). The most common ones:

Code System Meaning
EDC 03779Engine / InjectionPressure fault in the fuel injection system
ABS 01040BrakesWheel speed sensor open circuit / signal loss
ESP 22122Stability ControlElectronic stability program fault, may need sensor calibration
ECU 05678CommunicationCAN-bus communication fault between control units
DPF 11200Exhaust / EmissionsParticulate filter blockage, needs regeneration

To read these codes, confirm them with live data, and run operations like DPF regeneration, you'd use a Mercedes SD Connect C5 or a multi-brand tool like Jaltest.

Volvo FH Fault Codes

The Volvo FH and other Volvo/Renault Trucks models generate codes over the J1939 protocol as an SPN (Suspect Parameter Number) and FMI (Failure Mode Identifier) pair — not a single code like Mercedes, but a combination of two parameters.

SPN / FMI Meaning
SPN 100 FMI 3Critical drop in engine oil pressure / sensor circuit voltage high
SPN 100 FMI 1Oil pressure too low — engine protection may activate
SPN 190 FMI 0Engine RPM too high

Note: the FMI number indicates the type of failure (0 = too high, 1 = too low, 3 = voltage high, 4 = voltage low, etc.). The same SPN means something different with a different FMI — reading only the SPN leads to misdiagnosis.

On Volvo/Renault Trucks vehicles these codes are read with a Volvo Vocom 2 or Jaltest.

Frequently Asked Questions

Should I just look up the fault code online and fix it myself?

Knowing what a code means is a useful starting point, but the same code can have different root causes on different vehicles. Replacing parts based on the code number alone, without live data and freeze-frame confirmation, leads to unnecessary cost.

Why is the SPN/FMI system different from Mercedes?

SPN/FMI is the standard format defined by the J1939 protocol — used mainly on American/Scandinavian-origin heavy-duty vehicles (Volvo, partly Scania, partly MAN). Mercedes uses its own internal code system with EDC/ABS/ESP prefixes.

Does clearing the code fix the fault?

No. The code is just a record kept in memory; unless the physical fault (a sensor, wiring, or a mechanical part) is repaired, it comes back after a while.
