How Do Hybrid Electric Vehicles Work?

How Do Hybrid Electric Vehicles Work?

Hybrid vehicles stand out today for both performance and fuel economy. They are also a highly advantageous vehicle type in terms of emissions.

Hybrid electric vehicles operate with an electric motor powered by a battery together with an internal combustion engine.

With hybrid vehicles, the low-emission characteristic of electric cars combines with the power and range of vehicles with internal combustion engines.

The advantages of hybrid vehicles are as follows:

  • They operate with assistance from the electric motor:
  • Hybrid vehicles, like electric motor vehicles, use a smaller internal combustion engine. The battery in the vehicle supplies power to auxiliary loads and reduces engine idling when the vehicle is stopped. In this way, performance is not sacrificed and better fuel economy is achieved.

Regenerative braking feature:

Hybrid vehicle batteries do not need to be charged from an external source. Instead, regenerative braking and the internal combustion engine are used. The vehicle uses the electric motor as a generator, stores the energy obtained in the battery, and captures energy that would otherwise be lost during braking.

Fuel-efficient system design in hybrid vehicles:

Hybrid vehicles are classified as mild hybrid and full hybrid;

Mild hybrids use a battery and electric motor to supply power to the vehicle. They shut off the engine when the vehicle stops and provide fuel savings.

Mild hybrid vehicles cannot supply power using electricity alone. These vehicles are cheaper than full hybrids, but full hybrid vehicles are more advantageous in terms of fuel.

Full hybrid vehicles have larger batteries and electric motors that can also supply power at short distances and low speeds. These vehicles are more expensive than mild hybrids but provide greater fuel savings.
