What Is SFD?
SFD stands for the German Schutz Fahrzeug Diagnose — vehicle diagnostic protection. English sources also refer to it as Security Access.
Applied across the Volkswagen Group (VW, Audi, Seat, Skoda), this security measure ties access to the electronic control units and any changes made to them to an authorisation. The aim is to prevent programming and diagnostic work being carried out by unauthorised parties.
What Does SFD Block, and What Does It Not?

In other words, your tool connects and reads codes but cannot perform any operation that requires writing. This is the most common reason behind "my tool connects but will not do anything" on VW Group vehicles.
How Is the SFD Lock Opened?
The SFD lock is released through online authorisation:
- An authorised account is required. Access is granted through the manufacturer's server.
- The tool must be online. Authorisation cannot be done offline.
- Select the vehicle and module and send the unlock request.
- Authorisation is time-limited. The session closes after a period and must be renewed.
- Complete the work and close the session.
Important: SFD is not something permanently "removed"; authorisation is repeated for every intervention. Solutions promising permanent removal weaken the vehicle's security architecture, and responsibility sits with whoever applies them.
What This Means for the Workshop
- An internet connection is mandatory. Without it, no write operation is possible on a VW Group vehicle.
- Tool choice is critical. The tool must support SFD authorisation; one that does not will only read.
- A subscription may be required. Owning the hardware is not enough on its own.
- Plan your time. Because authorisation is time-limited, long jobs may need the session renewed.
