How Is Electric Vehicle Maintenance Performed?

How is electric vehicle maintenance performed?

Electric vehicles are more expensive than vehicles with internal combustion engines, but when it comes to fuel costs and similar matters, they are highly advantageous.

Another advantage is that these vehicles have a very simple structure. Thanks to this simple structure, their maintenance costs are quite low.

The components found in internal combustion engine vehicles require regular maintenance, but since most of these components do not exist in electric vehicles, their maintenance is very simple and inexpensive.

When you own an electric vehicle, you do not perform tasks such as oil service, transmission service, air filter changes or spark plug replacement. This saves you money.

Electric vehicles actually require very little maintenance, but vehicle manufacturers offer users specific maintenance schedules to guarantee that everything runs smoothly, and if these are not followed, your vehicle may even fall outside insurance coverage.

However, these maintenance procedures are easier and less costly compared to other vehicles. Let's take a look at the maintenance schedule prepared by an electric vehicle manufacturer for its vehicle;

Monthly maintenance (maintenance to be performed by the vehicle owner);

-Checking tire pressure, inspecting the tires and checking the washer fluid level.

What needs to be done every 12 thousand kilometers;

-You need to check the coolant for the battery, cabin heater, charger and inverter modules. Check for fluid leaks. Perform brake checks.

Check the steering, suspension and chassis. Check the power steering, half shafts and drive shafts, and repair them if there is wear or damage.

Check the airbags. Check the accelerator pedal for damage, wear, etc., and have it repaired if damaged. Check the suspension.

What needs to be done twice a year;

-Wash the underside of the body with water to remove corrosive materials.

What needs to be done every 24 thousand kilometers;

-The windshield wiper blades need to be replaced.

What needs to be done every 58 thousand kilometers;

-The cabin air filter needs to be replaced.

What needs to be done every 120 thousand kilometers;

-The gas struts supporting the hood and body lift need to be replaced.

What needs to be done every 5 years;

-The vehicle's coolant circuits need to be drained and refilled, and the brake fluid needs to be replaced.

What needs to be done every 7 years;

-The air conditioning desiccant needs to be replaced.

Although electric vehicle manufacturers publish different maintenance schedules, the tasks performed are similar in most of them.

The fact that electric vehicles require little maintenance does not mean there will never be problems with them. EV owners also need to carry out tasks such as tire replacement, brake servicing, steering component checks, and maintenance of components such as hoses, headlights and taillights.

Most important of all are the batteries, the most critical component of electric vehicles. All batteries degrade over time, and this happens gradually.

For this reason, if you have owned an electric vehicle for a long time, you will notice this difference yourself and will need to replace the battery pack.

In conclusion, although electric vehicle maintenance is less frequent and less costly, performing this maintenance is very important for the vehicle's lifespan.
