The most common problem in used car trading is bodywork repaired and repainted in the past without being obvious to the eye. A paint thickness gauge reveals that history.
What Does a Paint Thickness Gauge Do?
The gauge measures paint thickness on the panel surface. Original factory paint falls within a known range; later paint and filler raise that figure, revealing which panels have been worked on.
In used car trading this information directly affects price. It is the check most relied on by inspection points, dealers and buyers.
Measurement Methods
Body panels are not made of the same material on every vehicle, so gauges use different measuring methods:
- Magnetic (inductive): for steel and iron panels
- Eddy current: for aluminium and other non-ferrous panels
Because aluminium panels are now widespread, gauges supporting both methods (Fe/NFe) are preferred. A single-method gauge will misread aluminium panels or fail to read them at all.
Interpreting the Result Is a Separate Skill
The number on the display is not enough on its own. Values vary by make, model and panel — even the edge and the centre of the same panel can read differently.
Correct interpretation therefore takes experience: which panel leaves the factory in which range, and which deviation is normal versus a sign of work, is only known through accumulated reference. A decision based on a single reading is misleading.
