Mercedes commercial vehicles and passenger cars store a fault code whenever a control unit detects a condition outside its expected range. The code itself is only a pointer: it names the circuit, component or message that reported the problem, not the repair.
What a Mercedes Fault Code Tells You
A code identifies which control unit reported the fault and what kind of fault it is — for example a missing CAN message, a short circuit to ground, or an implausible sensor signal. Two different vehicles can store the same code for entirely different underlying reasons.
Because of this, the code narrows the search but does not close it. Confirming the actual cause requires live data, circuit measurement and, on many Mercedes modules, manufacturer level access.
How Mercedes Codes Are Grouped

| Drive and gear control codes | Drive control, gear control, clutch control and braking system messages |
| MCM engine management codes | Motor Control Module, including Cummins engined applications — EGR, throttle positioner, injectors and sensors |
Rows carrying a module abbreviation — FR, MCM, ADM, CPC — identify the unit that raised the code. Knowing which unit reported it is often more useful than the code number, because it tells you where on the vehicle to start.
Reading and Clearing Mercedes Fault Codes
Generic OBD readers see only the standard emissions codes. The great majority of Mercedes codes sit in body, chassis and powertrain modules that a generic tool cannot reach, which is why a fault is often reported as "no code found" on basic equipment.
Clearing a code does not repair the condition that set it. If the underlying fault is still present the code returns, usually within a few drive cycles, and on emissions related systems the vehicle may enter torque limitation again.
