What Are NOx Problems and Solutions?

What Are NOx Problems and Solutions?

In petrol, LPG and diesel engines, high-temperature combustion causes significant nitrogen oxidation. This can lead to faults in NOx systems.

Exhaust gas recirculation reduces NOx emissions but also affects engine performance and power.

NOx is toxic and linked to respiratory disease. Various reduction methods exist.

AdBlue fluid, sprayed into exhaust on heavy and commercial vehicles, reduces NOx emissions by converting them to nitrogen and water vapour.

Although AdBlue helps emissions, it can reduce vehicle performance and adds cost alongside fuel. In the EU, AdBlue use is mandatory; cross-border operators may seek analysis where not required.

Nitro Mekatronik AdBlue Analysis Emulator offers a simple solution so the vehicle runs on fuel only where legally permitted, improving cost and performance.

Some Methods Used to Reduce NOx Emissions

  • Staged Combustion — partial fuel burn lowers temperature and NOx.
  • Humid Air Method — steam mixed before combustion can cut NOx 70–80%.
  • Flue Gas Recirculation (EGR) — recirculated exhaust reduces oxygen and can cut NOx ~40%.
  • NOx Emulator — mimics the NOx sensor when it fails; mounts inside the sensor housing and works with CAN.
  • Selective Catalytic Reduction (SCR) — post-combustion NOx reduction with ammonia or HC-SCR using hydrocarbons instead of ammonia.
