Tractor Warning Lights and Their Meanings

A tractor's electrical circuits are supervised by several control units. While the tractor runs, those units continuously log data; when a functional fault occurs a fault code is generated in the tractor's control unit and stored in memory.

Most of these codes appear automatically on the digital display in front of the operator. But the display only tells you that something is wrong; to see which circuit and which sensor, you need a tractor diagnostic tool.

Three Colours, Three Levels of Urgency

Tractor dashboard warnings work on a colour code. Read the colour first:

Colour	Meaning	What to do
Red — STOP	A serious fault has occurred; the lamp flashes	Stop the engine IMMEDIATELY and establish the cause
Yellow — WARNING	A fault has occurred. Also lights when the park brake is applied with the engine running, or the shuttle lever is out of neutral	Have it checked as soon as possible
Blue — INFO	A fault in the hydraulic system or in an electrical component connected to the drivetrain	Consult an authorised service

Indicator Lamps and Their Meanings

#	Lamp	Meaning
1	Red STOP	Serious fault — stop the engine immediately
2	Yellow WARNING	A fault has occurred; park brake and shuttle lever position also trigger this lamp
3	Blue INFO	Fault in hydraulics or drivetrain electrics
4	Park brake	Park brake applied with engine running. An audible alarm may also sound depending on specification
5	Preheat (glow plugs)	Lights when the key is turned to the first position. Wait for it to go out before cranking
6	Hazard warning	Lights when the hazard flashers are on
7	Turn signal	Flashes with the indicators or hazard lights
8	Rear PTO	Rear power take-off engaged
9	PTO speed	Shows which speed is selected for the rear PTO
10	HMS Plus	Lights when HMS Plus is selected
11	Front wheel drive	Engaged. In automatic mode the letter A also lights
12	Differential lock	Lights when the diff lock is engaged
13	Main beam	Lights when headlights are on main beam
14	Gear display	On PowrQuad Plus / AutoQuad Plus, lights with the selected gear number
15	Gear limit	The illuminated segments show the highest available gear setting
16	Air pressure	On tractors with air brakes, indicates sufficient pressure to work with a trailer

What to Do When a Warning Lamp Comes On

Read the colour. If it is red, stop. Yellow and blue allow continued operation but must not be ignored.
Rule out the simple causes. Is the park brake applied, is the shuttle lever in neutral, are fuel and oil levels adequate?
Read the code. The dashboard only warns; a diagnostic tool shows which circuit the fault is in.
Record the code before clearing it. Clearing does not fix the fault, it only destroys the evidence.

Essentially all tractor brands use similar warning logic: Agrifarm, Agripower, AGT, Antonio Carraro, Başak, Belarus, BMC, Branson, Case, Claas, David Brown, Deutz, Erkunt, Fendt, Ford, Hattat, John Deere, Kubota, Landini, Massey Ferguson, McCormick, New Holland, Same, Steyr, Tümosan, Universal, Valtra, Zetor and others.

The symbols are largely standardised, but each brand has its own fault code structure. Reading codes therefore requires a tool with tractor and agricultural machinery coverage.
