What Are R151 Standards? Why Was R151 Introduced?

There is no doubt that automobiles have a very important place in our lives. Vehicles that provide us with great advantages in transportation can also cause major problems in traffic.

For example, in traffic there are many vehicle groups such as trucks, light commercial vehicles, passenger cars and motorcycles.

Ensuring safety while these vehicles move in traffic is extremely important. Because factors such as size differences and power differences between vehicles can create various problems without drivers being aware.

Various regulations have been made to prevent problems that may arise in traffic.

One of these regulations is the R151 standard. Its official name is UN Regulation No. 151.

This regulation was introduced to prevent accidents when smaller vehicles such as motorcycles end up in the blind spot of larger vehicles.

What is the R151 standard? Why were R151 standards introduced?

To explain more clearly, the general purpose of this regulation is to enable vulnerable road users to move more safely in traffic.

Thus both vulnerable road users and heavy-duty vehicle drivers drive more safely.

Regulations on this subject had been made before, but they were not very comprehensive.

Heavy-duty drivers maneuvering in traffic did not notice motorcycles and similar vehicles on their right or left; measures such as increasing the number of mirrors had been taken for this, but they were not sufficient to prevent these accidents.

That is why R151 regulations became necessary. In R151 regulations, the heavy-duty driver is intended to be supported with signals together with driver assistance systems.

In other words, during traffic, when any vulnerable road user approaches within a certain distance of a heavy-duty driver, the driver is warned with signals and preventing accidents becomes more reliable.

Together with these driver assistance systems, eliminating blind spots is targeted. Manual cancellation of these support signals is strictly prohibited and not possible; however, they are disabled in case of a fault in the vehicle.

In short, R151 regulations are rules created to prevent accidents between heavy-duty drivers and drivers such as motorcycles and bicycles in blind spots during maneuvers.

This is done by sending signals to the driver through driver assistance systems. These regulations are extremely important for ensuring safety in traffic.
