What Are Flexible Fuel Vehicles and How Do They Work?
Flexible fuel vehicles contain an internal combustion engine. Their main feature is that they can run on a mixture of gasoline and ethanol.
These vehicles can operate on pure gasoline as well as gasoline-ethanol blends. Apart from ethanol compatibility and a different drivetrain, flexible fuel vehicles share the same characteristics as other gasoline vehicles.
Higher ethanol content reduces range, but the vehicle runs with greater performance.
How do flexible fuel vehicles work?
Flexible fuel vehicles contain one internal combustion engine. These vehicles run on gasoline or gasoline-ethanol blends.
Most components in these vehicles are the same as in other gasoline vehicles. However, some systems such as the fuel pump and fuel injection system require ethanol-compatible components.
The engine control unit is also calibrated according to the oxygen content of ethanol.
Basic components of flexible fuel vehicles:
Battery: Supplies electricity to start the vehicle and power vehicle electronics.
Electronic Control Unit: This unit controls the fuel mixture, ignition timing, and emission system. It monitors vehicle operation, detects problems, and warns the driver.
Exhaust system: The exhaust system expels exhaust gas from the engine through the exhaust pipe. The exhaust system includes a three-way catalytic converter to reduce emissions.
Fuel filler: Used to fill the vehicle fuel tank.
Fuel injection system: This system delivers fuel to the combustion chambers for ignition.
Fuel line: This line transfers fuel from the tank to the fuel injection system.
Fuel pump: This pump transfers fuel through the fuel line to the injection system.

Internal combustion engine: Fuel is injected into the combustion chamber where it mixes with air and is ignited by the spark from the spark plug.
