What Is a Knock Sensor and What Does Knocking Do?

What Is Knocking?

Air and fuel are mixed and burned in the engine cylinders. Normally that mixture burns in a controlled way, ignited by the spark plug. When pressure and heat cause the mixture to ignite on its own, independently of the spark, that is knocking (detonation).

Knocking damages every moving part in the engine: piston crowns, rings, big-end bearings and valves all take the hit. This is why the ECU intervenes the moment it detects it.

What Does the Knock Sensor Do?

The knock sensor is mounted on the engine block and listens to engine vibration. When it recognises the sharp, high-frequency signature of detonation it signals the ECU, which retards ignition timing and stops the knock immediately.

The sensor is therefore a protective device. When it fails the engine is not left unprotected — the ECU stays on the safe side by running a permanently retarded ignition map. The price of that is power and fuel economy.

What Does the Driver Notice?

Symptoms of a faulty knock sensor usually appear under load and during acceleration. A driver who knows their vehicle feels it straight away.

Which Engines Lose the Most Power?

How much power is lost depends on the engine's octane limit and the knock sensor data. The greatest losses appear on:

  • High compression engines — the most knock-prone group
  • Turbocharged engines — boost is pulled back too, doubling the loss
  • Flex fuel systems — fuel octane varies, so they depend on the sensor more

On low compression naturally aspirated engines the loss is less noticeable, but it is still there.

Is Knocking Always a Sensor Fault?

No. If the engine really is detonating, the sensor is working correctly. Genuine causes of knock include:

  • Low octane fuel
  • Carbon build-up in the combustion chamber
  • Overheating
  • An excessively lean mixture
  • Incorrect ignition timing

Replacing the sensor in this situation hides the real problem. Find the cause of the knock first.
