What Is OBD?

In the 1970s, the basic principles of the OBD socket were to identify faults that increase vehicle exhaust emissions and to make the driver aware of them immediately. It is an important part of the automotive sector.

OBD grew further in the 1990s and began to detect issues in vehicle engine control, chassis, body and electronic systems, and to enable communication between those systems.

For motor vehicles, OBDI and OBDII standards are used in the United States; EOBD standards are used in European countries.

Petrol vehicles have had to meet EOBD compliance since 2001, and diesel passenger vehicles since 2004.

All electronic equipment on vehicles that meet the EOBD standard can be controlled on the vehicle by the vehicle ECU (the vehicle “brain”), fault conditions can be diagnosed/detected, stored in fault memory, and the driver can be warned with the instrument cluster warning lamp using standard icons.

On the vehicle, diagnosis, fault reading, fault clearing, component coding, adaptation / parameter (live data reading) and component actuation test operations can be performed.

EOBD has standardized the fault codes read by diagnostic tools from all vehicle manufacturers in the automotive sector. Thus a fault code means the same thing on all vehicles and indicates a fault in the same component.

What Is Diagnostics?

Diagnostics means “identifying, diagnosing”. As the word itself indicates, diagnostic tools perform diagnostic operations on vehicles. Thanks to these devices, problems or faults that may occur on vehicles are easily diagnosed.

A diagnostic device — whose literal meaning is fault finder — works by connecting directly to the ECU. There are many different types: wireless, compatible with every vehicle, compatible with a single brand or model, and so on. The OBD port is used to connect the diagnostic device to the ECU.

How Does a Diagnostic Tool Work?

The term that entered our language from English means “On Board Diagnostic”. After the connection between the vehicle ECU and the diagnostic tool is established via OBD, the vehicle brand, model and engine type are selected on the device.

It should not be forgotten that not every device is compatible with every model and that incorrect detections about the vehicle may be made.

After the vehicle type is selected on the device, the diagnostics section is entered and the systems thought to be faulty — engine, lighting, brakes, comfort systems, etc. — are selected.

On the screen that opens, the fault code recorded in the vehicle ECU is shown together with the time, date and description.

Because all information in diagnostics is expressed as codes, authorized persons must know what each code means.
