What Is a Car Headlight?

A car headlight may look like a simple component at first glance, but it is actually one of the most important parts of a vehicle.

Headlights are the first parts that catch your eye when you look at a vehicle from the front.

They perform many technical tasks and have a structure that enhances or changes the design of the vehicle.

Their main purpose, as is well known, is to illuminate the surroundings when driving in the dark and to provide the driver with healthy, hazard-free and safe driving.

In addition, headlights also ensure visibility to other vehicles in foggy or overcast weather. High beams and low beams are controlled by the driver according to driving conditions.

Car Headlight Types

1) Reflector Headlight

Located inside the headlight housing, these are mirrored parts that reflect light according to the shape of the headlight bowl.

A bulb is positioned in front of the reflector and emits light outward or backward. The headlight bowl reflects the light onto the road according to its shape or adjustable angle.

Reflector headlights are among the lowest-cost headlights used on vehicles. Only halogen bulbs are used.

2) Projector (Lens) Headlights

The task of the lenses is to transfer light from the source onto the road homogeneously. There are reflectors designed to direct light straight toward the lens.

A lens is placed after the reflectors, and a shutter is located between the reflector and the lens.

The purpose of the shutter is to prevent light from reflecting upward through the lens.

This way, light cannot rise above headlight level and will not disturb oncoming drivers, providing safe driving.

Adaptive Headlights

The projector in adaptive headlights can be directed vertically and horizontally with the help of an electric motor.

In adaptive headlights, projector adjustment may depend on steering angle. Guidance is also performed through control unit software using information from cameras and sensors that continuously monitor the road.

Light Source Types

Halogen, xenon, LED, LED matrix and laser types are available.
