Growing environmental awareness and tightening emission standards (Euro 4, 5, 6 and beyond) have driven diesel engine manufacturers to develop innovative technologies to reduce the harmful components in exhaust gases. One of these technologies is the Selective Catalytic Reduction (SCR) system, and the main additive used in this system is known as AdBlue. AdBlue is a special mixture of urea and deionized water and is used to convert the harmful Nitrogen Oxide (NOx) emissions in diesel engine exhaust gases into harmless nitrogen gas (N2) and water vapor (H2O).
The AdBlue system has become standard especially in modern heavy-duty vehicles (trucks, buses), construction machinery and many new-generation diesel passenger cars. Although it is an environmentally friendly technology, the AdBlue system can also encounter various faults over time. These faults can restrict the vehicle's performance, cause the check engine light to come on and, in some cases, even prevent the vehicle from starting.

How Does the AdBlue (SCR) System Work?
The SCR system works by precisely injecting AdBlue fluid into the exhaust gas flow. When AdBlue comes into contact with the high-temperature exhaust gases, it converts into ammonia (NH3). This ammonia reacts with NOx (Nitrogen Oxide and Nitrogen Dioxide) inside the SCR catalyst, breaking them down into harmless nitrogen gas and water vapor.

             AdBlue Tank: A special tank where the AdBlue fluid is stored.
             AdBlue Pump (Supply Module): Draws AdBlue from the tank, pressurizes it and sends it to the injector.
             AdBlue Injector (Dosing Module): Sprays a precise amount of AdBlue into the exhaust system according to the signals it receives from the ECU.
             SCR Catalyst: The main component where NOx reacts with ammonia and is converted into N2 and H2O.
             NOx Sensors: Located at the inlet and outlet of the SCR catalyst. They measure the system's NOx reduction efficiency and provide feedback to the ECU.
             AdBlue Level and Quality Sensor: Measures the amount of AdBlue in the tank and sometimes its quality (concentration).
             AdBlue Heater System: AdBlue fluid freezes at around -11°C. To prevent freezing in cold climates, heater elements are located in the tank, pump and hoses.
             Control Unit (ECU/DCU): Manages the entire system, processes data from the sensors and controls the pump and injector.
Common Causes of AdBlue System Faults
Since the AdBlue system consists of sensitive components, it can be affected by various factors:
             AdBlue Pump Failure: The motor inside the pump burning out, failing to build pressure or leaking.
             AdBlue Injector Blockage or Failure: The injector becoming clogged due to AdBlue crystallization or failing to spray properly.
             NOx Sensor Failure: The sensors becoming contaminated, burning out or measuring incorrectly. This can cause the system to misjudge its efficiency and generate a fault code.
             AdBlue Level or Quality Sensor Failure: Incorrectly indicating the amount or quality of AdBlue in the tank.
             AdBlue Heater Element Failure: AdBlue freezing in cold weather and the system not working.
             Contamination of the AdBlue Fluid or Use of the Wrong Fluid: Filling the tank with water or another fluid instead of AdBlue, or AdBlue becoming contaminated with substances such as fuel or oil, can cause serious damage to the system.
             AdBlue Crystallization: Crystallization can occur in the lines and injector, especially when low-quality AdBlue is used or the system remains idle for a long time.
