AdBlue helps treat exhaust gases on diesel engines. A fault in the system directly affects emissions compliance and usually results in a power derate.
What Happens When AdBlue Fails?
- AdBlue or emissions warning on the dashboard
- Engine power derate — the vehicle no longer pulls as it did
- Increased fuel consumption
- Rising emission values
- If neglected, the vehicle progressively refusing to run
On heavy vehicles this is a direct commercial loss: a truck stopped by AdBlue is a truck earning nothing.
The Same Warning, Very Different Causes
An AdBlue warning can sit on top of wildly different situations. The simplest is a low tank; but the same warning can come from the injector, pump, filter, level or quality sensor, NOx sensor, heater circuit or the SCR catalyst.
These causes differ enormously in cost — from a top-up at one end to catalyst replacement at the other. Acting without establishing which it is either fails to fix the problem or creates unnecessary expense.
The Two Most Commonly Missed Points
1. The NOx sensor. An "AdBlue fault" on the display does not mean the problem is on the AdBlue side. If the NOx sensor cannot report correctly, the system cannot calculate dosing and reports it as an AdBlue fault.
2. Fluid quality. Cheap or loosely dispensed AdBlue may be off-specification. Bad fluid crystallises at the injector and becomes a far more expensive fault. Using certified product is the cheapest precaution available.
What Proper Diagnosis Requires
- Reading the system fault records
- Live monitoring of dosing rate, tank level, fluid temperature and NOx values
- Testing pump and injector from the tool
- Resetting the system counters after repair
This requires a diagnostic tool with heavy vehicle coverage; a basic OBD reader cannot reach the SCR system.
That last point matters: even when the physical fault is repaired, if the counters are not reset the vehicle continues its countdown and the warnings remain.
