What Is BMW Adaptation?
BMW adaptation refers to the learning / calibration procedures performed so control units work correctly with a sensor, actuator, or new part. Examples: throttle body learning, injector values, steering angle sensor, transmission or battery registrations — which step is required depends on the vehicle and the part that was changed.
Adaptation should not be confused with coding (changing options) or ECU programming (software flashing). When a part is replaced, sometimes coding + adaptation are required together; sometimes only the service function is enough.
Workshops commonly use the service functions / test plans inside ISTA. Menu names and paths can vary depending on the ISTA version, chassis code (F/G, etc.), and hardware, so it is safer to work from the vehicle and unit context rather than memorizing a screenshot.
