The DSG transmission control unit — the mechatronic card — carries its own software and its own adaptation data. Reading, updating, cloning or replacing that card is a distinct discipline from engine tuning, and it needs equipment built for it.
We distribute MagicMotorsport Flex, which is the tool this work is done with.
Why the Older Hardware Fell Behind
This work used to be done with the x17. As vehicle electronics moved on, newer models and control unit families went beyond what that hardware could address. Flex was developed to cover them, and it is faster and better equipped — while the transmission package is actually cheaper than the equivalent on x17.
What Flex Covers on Transmissions
- Reading and writing DSG mechatronic card software
- Software updates on the transmission control unit
- Cloning — copying a card's data to a replacement unit
- Reset and reprogramming operations
- Transmission coding
Beyond transmissions the same device handles chip tuning, EGR, DPF and immobiliser work, and it operates online so coverage is continuously updated.
Cloning Is the Difficult Part
On DSG units, cloning is where most jobs go wrong. A mechatronic card holds data specific to the vehicle it came from, and a replacement card that has not been correctly cloned produces a transmission that shifts badly, throws faults, or does not engage at all.
Done correctly, the replacement carries the original configuration and the vehicle behaves as it did before — which is exactly why the tool matters here more than in most operations.
Connection Methods
Work can be done over OBD where the vehicle allows it. Control units that must be read on the bench are handled with the adapters supplied with Flex, and locked units are opened with a separate adapter included with the device. Immobiliser-equipped or not, the operation can be carried out either way.
