Electric vehicles are becoming more common on the market every day. This means there are now more electric vehicle batteries in circulation as well.

As electric vehicle sales increase, emission levels are decreasing.

This is a very positive development, but the fate of the batteries in these vehicles is still a cause for concern. 

For now, people do not view lithium-ion battery recycling as a profitable business venture, both because it is not yet a major problem and because the systems of these batteries are complex.

However, as these vehicles increase day by day, this issue will become a problem in the future. That is why a solution needs to be found.

Electric vehicles aim to improve sustainability. But if the environment is harmed during the production of new batteries through activities such as mining, this cannot be considered sustainable.

For this reason, we also need to ensure that these batteries are recycled. Certain processes are already being carried out for this purpose.

For example, old electric vehicle batteries are being used together with solar energy to power street lights in the town of Namie in Japan. This is a good development, but it is not as effective as recycling.

The most common EV battery recycling methods currently in use are hydrometallurgy and pyrometallurgy.

How are electric vehicle batteries recycled through hydrometallurgy?

Recycling facilities manually disassemble the valuable components that make up the batteries, such as metals and plastics. This is one of the most effective ways to separate these materials.

Before the batteries are disassembled, they are discharged. The discharged energy is then used in the recycling process, which is a very nice detail.

The goal here is to ensure that nothing goes to waste. After the batteries are broken down, they are sorted into different groups.

One of these is the 'black mass'. Black mass is the most important part of this process because it contains valuable elements such as lithium and cobalt.

Once the process reaches this stage, the batteries are recovered by chemically processing them using a wet process — this is the hydrometallurgy part. Through these processes, the batteries are recycled and mining activity is reduced.

How are electric vehicle batteries recycled through pyrometallurgy?

The pyrometallurgy method is another way of recycling electric vehicle batteries. This method is not effective and is also not good in terms of sustainability.

This is because very high temperatures are used to process the components being recycled. If you are recycling and the process itself is harmful, it is very important that the process be extremely efficient.

However, this is not the case here, because during this process many elements, including lithium, are not recovered.

In conclusion, although recycling electric vehicle batteries is still an underdeveloped industry, developing this industry is extremely important.

If the goal is worldwide adoption of electric vehicles, effective methods must also be developed to recycle such large quantities of materials.

A sustainable supply chain for the production and recycling of electric vehicle batteries is an extremely important requirement.
