The airbag system holds a fault memory of its own. When the airbag warning lamp stays on or flashes, that memory contains a stored fault — and until it is cleared, the system will not return to its normal state.
On Ford vehicles this work is done with the UCDS device, because the restraint module is not reachable through generic OBD equipment.
Why the Airbag Lamp Stays On
The restraint control module continuously monitors its circuits: the airbag units, the seat belt pretensioners, the crash sensors and the wiring between them. Any interruption is recorded, and the lamp is the module's way of saying it can no longer guarantee correct deployment.
This matters more than most dashboard warnings. A restraint system with a stored fault may not deploy correctly in a collision, and it is an inspection failure in most markets.
Why a Generic Tool Will Not Do It
The airbag module sits outside the OBD2 emissions standard. A basic code reader connected to the same socket cannot see it, which is why the fault often appears as "no codes found" on inexpensive equipment while the lamp is still lit.
Reading and resetting the restraint module requires manufacturer level access — on Ford, that is what UCDS provides.

Reset Is Not Repair
Clearing the airbag fault memory removes the record, not the condition. If a connector, sensor or airbag unit has genuinely failed, the fault returns immediately and the system remains compromised. Reset is the final step after the physical fault has been corrected — not a way of turning the lamp off.
