What Are the Causes and Solution of Porsche Steering Angle Sensor Fault?

The steering angle sensor is a component of the ESP (Electronic Stability Program) system that determines which direction the steering wheel is turned.

When this sensor is faulty, many systems connected to your ESP system — such as yaw control, traction control, active brake assist, lane keeping, and adaptive cruise control — will stop working, depending on which features your vehicle has.

For this reason, if your vehicle's safety systems do not work correctly, your vehicle will operate like one without these features; if you use your vehicle at its limits, the risk of an accident will increase.

You cannot fix a mechanical fault by performing an SAS reset. To resolve this, intervention in the steering angle sensor software is required.

How does this fault occur?

  • If the steering angle sensor is removed and incorrectly installed,
  • If the inside of the steering angle sensor is opened,
  • If there is a problem with steering geometry,
  • If the vehicle has been in an accident,
  • If incorrect software intervention has been performed,
  • If incorrect calibration has been performed

How is this fault resolved?

The solution to the fault varies depending on its level; the most common first-level fault is an adaptation problem and is easily performed with our diagnostic tools.

Second-level mechanical fault: if you cannot perform adaptation even though your vehicle geometry is completely correct, your fault is mechanical and mechanical fault repair must be performed on the steering angle sensor.

(Attention! Even if you fix the mechanical fault, your problem will not be resolved unless you remove the mechanical fault from the steering angle sensor software-wise.)

Third level: there is no communication with the steering angle sensor at all, or there is damage at an irreparable level. In this case, your steering angle sensor may need to be replaced.
