A starter motor rarely fails without warning. Recognising the symptoms early keeps the vehicle off the hard shoulder and stops a small job becoming a large one.

The Most Common Mistake: Skipping the Battery
A "no crank" complaint often has nothing to do with the starter motor. A weak battery imitates a faulty starter exactly, and that is why so many healthy starters get replaced for nothing.
Corroded terminals, a loose main cable or a poor engine ground produce the same symptom. Telling them apart requires measurement under load; looking at battery voltage alone is not enough.
The Problem May Not Be the Starter at All
If no command is reaching the starter, the fault is somewhere else entirely: ignition switch, starter relay, immobiliser or neutral safety switch. In those cases the starter is perfectly healthy and replacing it changes nothing.
Making that distinction requires checking the vehicle's electrical circuit and, where necessary, the immobiliser and engine control unit with a diagnostic tool.

- Where necessary, testing the starter on a bench under load
That last point matters: a repaired or remanufactured starter fitted without comparing current draw and no-load speed against manufacturer figures comes back with the same complaint, and the labour is paid for twice.
