A modern vehicle runs dozens of electronic control units, and almost every fault it develops leaves a trace in one of them. An OBD2 diagnostic tool is what lets you read that trace: fault codes, live sensor data and, on the better equipment, active tests and service functions.
The market runs from cheap code readers to full workshop platforms, and the gap between them is much larger than the price suggests. This guide compares the brands and model families we supply and support every day, so you can match the tool to the work you actually do.
What OBD2 Covers — and What It Does Not
OBD2 became mandatory on most petrol vehicles from 1996 and on diesels from 2001–2004 depending on the market. It standardises one thing: emissions related data, delivered through a standard connector under the dashboard.
Everything beyond that — ABS, airbag, transmission, body control, comfort modules, coding and adaptation — sits outside the OBD2 standard and is manufacturer specific. This is the most misunderstood point in the market. A cheap reader that "supports OBD2" will still return nothing on an airbag fault, because that module was never part of the standard.

Trade-off: priced accordingly, and some special functions need additional modules or a subscription.
Launch Creader series — CRP123X, CRP129X, CRP909X
For: small workshops and advanced enthusiasts.
Capability: engine, transmission, ABS and SRS diagnosis, live data, and on the higher models service resets — oil, EPB, SAS and BMS.
Trade-off: no coding or programming; coverage is shallower than the X431 line.
Autel
Autel is the reference point for many workshops, particularly where ADAS and TPMS work is involved.
MaxiSys series — MS906, MS909, MS919, Ultra
For: professional workshops, especially those adding calibration work.
Capability: full system coverage, bi-directional control, coding, adaptation, ECU programming on the upper models, and integration with Autel's ADAS calibration frames. The Ultra adds an oscilloscope and advanced measurement.
Trade-off: the top models are a serious investment and only pay back if the workshop takes on the work they unlock.
MaxiCheck and MaxiDiag — MX808, MD808 Pro
For: general repair shops needing multi-system access without programming.
Capability: all-system fault reading, live data and a broad set of service functions.
Trade-off: no ECU programming, limited coding.
MaxiTPMS — TS408, TS508
Dedicated tyre pressure sensor programming and relearn. A specialist tool rather than a general scanner, but for a tyre business it removes a recurring bottleneck.
Topdon
Topdon has moved quickly in this segment. The Phoenix family targets professional use with online programming, topology mapping and ADAS support, while ArtiDiag covers the portable mid-range and Tornado handles battery charging and testing. The appeal is the feature-to-price ratio; coverage on rarer European models is where it is still catching up.
Thinkcar
The ThinkTool line sits between the enthusiast and professional tiers, with modular add-ons that let a workshop extend capability over time rather than paying for everything up front. A reasonable choice where the budget is fixed but the workload is expected to grow.
Choosing by the Work, Not the Spec Sheet
The specification list is rarely the deciding factor. Three questions settle it faster:
- Which vehicles come through the door? A shop working mainly on passenger cars needs a very different tool from one handling trucks and heavy vehicles, where 24 V systems and manufacturer protocols apply.
- Which jobs do you want to stop turning away? Coding, ADAS calibration, key programming and TPMS each require specific capability. Choose against the jobs you intend to take on, not only the ones you already do.
- What does the update cost after year one? Vehicle coverage ages fast. A cheaper tool with an expensive or short update cycle often costs more over three years than a dearer one.
One point worth stating plainly: a fault code names a circuit, not a faulty part. Two vehicles can store the same code for entirely different reasons, and replacing parts on the strength of a code alone is the most common way workshops lose money. The tool shortens the diagnosis; it does not replace it.
