The Diesel Particulate Filter (DPF) is an exhaust aftertreatment component that traps the soot particles produced when fuel burns in the engine. Its regeneration system periodically burns off those trapped particles at high temperature.
If that burn-off does not happen regularly, deposits accumulate and the filter becomes blocked.
What Happens When the DPF Blocks?
A blocked filter destroys the pressure and heat balance of the vehicle. Exhaust back pressure rises, and that pressure works its way back toward the engine.
Symptoms of a Blocked DPF

Which Components Get Damaged?
A blocked DPF does not stay contained. It damages, in order:
- Turbo — rising back pressure loads the turbo directly
- EGR valve — more soot is pushed toward the EGR side, seizing the valve
- Injectors — repeated failed regeneration attempts wear them
- Engine internals — fuel dilution of the oil and rising oil level
- Start-stop system — disabled
Warning: during failed regenerations fuel washes into the sump oil and the oil level rises. This is a serious risk to the engine; if the level has passed maximum, the oil must be changed immediately.
Why Does a DPF Block?
- Short-journey use. The engine never reaches regeneration temperature and soot is never burned off.
- Interrupted regeneration. Stopping and switching off the vehicle mid-regeneration.
- Poor fuel quality. Produces more soot.
- Faulty sensors. If the differential pressure or temperature sensor is wrong, the system never starts a regeneration.
- Wrong engine oil. Oil that is not DPF-compatible (not low-ash) blocks the filter permanently.
- An unresolved EGR or injector fault. Continuously produces excess soot.
Clean or Replace?
Once the filter has been cleaned or replaced, most of the faults above disappear. But cleaning alone is not a permanent fix: unless the underlying cause is addressed, the filter fills again quickly.
After cleaning, the DPF ash value and regeneration counters must be reset. Without this the system still believes the filter is full and keeps triggering unnecessary regenerations.
