What Is Boot in ECU Programming Devices?

What Is Boot in ECU Programming Devices? How Is the Boot Procedure Performed?

Technology continues to develop every day. This brings great convenience to the automotive sector, as it does to every sector.

As operations shift from mechanical to electronic, working on vehicles becomes easier. Intervening in the vehicle control unit—the ECU—is now quite easy.

Like every operation you perform on the ECU, ECU programming operations have also become widely preferred. Loading software onto vehicles, in other words chip tuning, is now very popular.

Chip tuning used to reduce rising fuel costs, save fuel, and increase vehicle performance is done with programming devices. 


So what are these devices and how do they work?

You can perform your software operations professionally with the Flex ECU programming device from Magicmotorsport, whose official distributor we are, the Kess V3 device from Alientech, and the New Genius and Trasdata devices from Dimsport.

The devices read the identity of the ECU on the vehicle; depending on the operation to be performed, the file is read from EPROM and flash.

Chip tuning, DPF, EGR, DTC, and AdBlue operations are done via flash; cloning operations are done via EPROM. These operations are performed through specific modules.

Operations are performed with OBD, bench, and boot protocols. With OBD and bench protocols you can work from the desktop without removing the ECU; with the boot protocol you remove the ECU.

In the OBD module, connection is made with the OBD cable; in the bench module, connection is made with pin terminals. The boot module is the procedure where boot cables are soldered to the ECU after opening its cover. 

The boot module is generally used in older vehicles where the ECU cover must be opened. The rear cover of the ECU is opened. The program gives us a connection diagram.

Cables are connected and soldered according to that diagram. The program shows us which cable to solder where. If there is a resistor in the connection, we also add resistors to the legs where resistors are placed.

When the instructions are followed according to the given diagram, the operation is completed.
