What Is a Diesel Particulate Filter?

The diesel particulate filter (DPF) found in diesel vehicles is the system that removes combustion particles from exhaust gas and lowers emission values.

While the vehicle is moving, or when the ECU (engine control unit) does not perform diesel particulate filter cleaning, the filter clogs and your vehicle illuminates the particulate filter fault light.

In some cases this light may not come on; you should recognize the fault from certain vehicle symptoms.

• The vehicle loses traction
• Fuel consumption increases
• Some vehicles emit a bad odor from the exhaust
• When the diesel particulate filter clogs, turbo pressure drops and the vehicle ECU may record a turbo fault

What Are Some Causes That Lead to Diesel Particulate Filter Clogging?

• Continuous use at low RPM
• Use of poor-quality fuel and oil
• Excessive city driving
• Long idle running of the vehicle

Why Is Diesel Particulate Filter Cleaning Necessary?

Many factors can cause diesel particulate filter faults.

This usually results from short-distance use or running at low RPM to save fuel.

After these conditions, the engine and particulate filter do not reach operating temperature and cannot self-clean.

If the pressure sensor is replaced without recalibration, or if there are injector faults, EGR faults or oxygen sensor defects, the particulate filter system can clog.

The diesel particulate filter is an important system for the vehicle and also contributes to engine smoke and emissions.

When it clogs, the engine and its components are also subject to wear.

Oil pump, injectors, turbo, pump and EGR inevitably produce higher smoke emissions and cause poor combustion.

Increased smoke causes the diesel particulate filter to clog faster; excessive fuel consumption and loss of traction cause the engine to protect itself and accumulate soot.

When the diesel particulate filter is connected to a cleaning machine, soot inside is expelled and internal cleaning takes place.

This machine uses high pressure and chemical particulate cleaning fluid.

This way, soot and blockages inside the diesel particulate filter are cleaned.
