EBS (Electronic Braking System) manages brake control electronically. It is designed to work together with ABS (anti-lock braking) and ASR (traction control) and keeps the vehicle under control.
It is widely used on heavy vehicles — trucks, tractor units, buses and trailers.
How Does EBS Work?
In a conventional air brake system, pedal pressure is transmitted mechanically to the brake chambers through the air lines, and that transmission takes time. With EBS, pedal pressure is converted into an electronic signal; the signal reaches the brake control unit and the modulators apply the brakes immediately.
The air line remains as a backup — if the electronic circuit fails, the system reverts to mechanical operation.

EBS vs ABS vs ASR

EBS does not replace ABS and ASR — it is the higher-level system that contains them.
What Happens When EBS Fails?
- The EBS warning lamp lights on the dashboard.
- The system drops into backup (mechanical) mode; the brakes still work but the electronic functions are disabled.
- On vehicles running with a trailer, trailer braking can become mismatched.
- Wear balancing is lost and pads begin wearing at different rates.
The most common causes are wheel speed sensors, modulator failure, wiring and connector problems, and trailer socket or supply voltage issues.
How Is an EBS Fault Diagnosed?
EBS requires a diagnostic tool with heavy vehicle coverage; a standard OBD reader cannot reach this module. Diagnosis involves live data from the wheel speed sensors, modulator tests and checking trailer communication.
