What Is an Immobilizer? What Are Immobilizer Fault Symptoms?

What Is an Immobilizer?

Discovered in 1944 by Frank Marugg, it is a vehicle protection system.

Immobilizer is a word derived from English and from the word immobilize, meaning to make immobile in Turkish; immobilizer technology is used in almost all vehicles today.

How Does an Immobilizer Work?

One of the parts is placed in the vehicle's engine system. The deeper this installed part is, the greater the vehicle's protection against theft.

The risk of access and tampering decreases accordingly. The other part is placed inside the ignition key.

Vehicles can run based on the immobilizer part installed in the engine system matching the part in the key when the ignition is turned.

Therefore, the immobilizer system makes it almost impossible to start the car with a plain ignition switch.

Immobilizer systems can work in three different ways:

Some immobilizer systems automatically lock the vehicle's ignition system when the part in the ignition key does not match the other part in the engine system, or when an attempt is made to start with a plain ignition switch.

Some lock the vehicle's fuel supply in the same situation. Immobilizer systems that lock both at the same time also exist.

Immobilizer Fault Symptoms

The system can fault due to key drop, liquid contact or reduced service life of the key. When you insert the key into the ignition:

  • Lights coming on late even though the key is inserted
  • Engine cranks but does not start
  • Vehicle no longer unlocks with remote control
  • Immobilizer fault light illuminates on the instrument cluster

Reasons like these prove that your vehicle has an immobilizer fault.
