A battery is an energy source that stores chemical energy for use as electrical energy when needed. Vehicles move thanks to the battery.
Therefore the battery is regarded as the most important part of the vehicle. When the battery fails, the vehicle will not run. We can point to two main causes of battery failure.
The first is a manufacturing defect, the other is user error. By finding the cause of the battery fault, the fault is eliminated and the vehicle is made to run again.
Batteries with manufacturing defects appear shortly after the vehicle is started. Because of this fault, the battery cannot produce enough energy to start the vehicle.
User-error faults result from sulphation caused by overcharging.
Batteries exposed to high temperature for long periods have shorter service life. In other words, the battery discharges faster. Because the battery charging pattern is disrupted, sulphation occurs.
Ways to tell that the battery is overcharged:
- Excessive heating occurs in the battery.
- Due to excessive heating, the acid water ratio in the battery decreases and the water darkens in colour.
- Due to excessive heating, shedding occurs on the plates.
- Glass fibres appear on the surface of the acid water in the battery.
- A blinking-like effect is seen when the accelerator is pressed in the vehicle.
- The underside of the vents on the battery cap turns black.
Battery test devices are tools that provide control of the power source of vehicle electrical systems and obtain all information needed for maintenance of the battery, the most important component of the vehicle.
To measure the battery, a charge status table and battery charge meter devices must be used. Voltage and density measurement is performed on vehicles with open-system batteries.
Density measurement cannot be performed on sealed-system vehicles.
