Why Is Diesel Particulate Filter Flushing Necessary?

Diesel particulate filter is found on almost all Euro 4, 5 and 6 diesel vehicles produced after 2006.

DPFs before 2009 were designed as open filters; after 2009 closed DPFs began to be used.

This topic was apparently not researched enough by car manufacturers and has become a headache for drivers in recent years.

Diesel particulate filter made of silicon carbide and cordierite in a honeycomb structure traps and holds harmful solid particles in the exhaust.

However, soot trapped in the diesel particulate filter builds up over time and causes blockages.

Pressure sensors on diesel particulate filters measure the level of accumulated residue in the filter; when residue reaches a critical level the DPF warning light on the instrument cluster comes on and regeneration begins.

In some cases the vehicle cannot complete regeneration because excessive soot in the filter prevents the engine from running efficiently.

Then the DPF warning stays on continuously, the vehicle goes into protection mode and will not rev properly.

You may need to drive at high rpm to force regeneration; if that does not work, take the vehicle to a specialist workshop and with a diagnostic tool perform regeneration to burn the soot accumulated in the DPF.
