AdBlue is a fluid made of deionised water and urea, used to reduce the emissions of diesel engines. It is found on many vehicle groups, above all on heavy commercial vehicles.
The AdBlue system can develop faults through poor fuel quality or other causes, and the tank can simply run dry. In both cases the vehicle lights a warning lamp.
What Happens When AdBlue Fails?

Drivers, logistics and haulage companies facing this repeatedly look for a permanent answer. With a chronic fault, going back to a workshop every time is expensive — and on a long haul there is not always a workshop to find.
Solution 1 — AdBlue Emulator
With an emulator fitted, the vehicle holds the AdBlue fluid at a set level and sends a signal to the ECU reporting that the system is operating normally, allowing the vehicle to keep working.
Solution 2 — Software Solution
Besides an emulator, the problem can also be resolved in software. The file is read from the ECU with a programming tool, revised, and written back to the vehicle.
Diesel particulate filter (DPF), EGR and AdBlue problems can all be addressed this way. It is also possible to reverse the operation and return the vehicle to its original state — provided the original file has been kept.
What Is AdBlue Reset?
Separately from the above there is the AdBlue reset procedure. It is performed mainly on passenger cars but also on heavy vehicles.
Once an AdBlue fault has been repaired, the system counters and warning stages must be reset. Without the reset the vehicle continues its countdown and the warnings remain, even though the physical problem has been solved.
The reset is carried out with a diagnostic tool that has heavy vehicle coverage.
Find the Cause Before Reaching for a Fix
Most AdBlue faults come from a limited set of causes:
- Crystallised urea deposits at the injector
- A failed dosing pump
- Out-of-specification or degraded fluid
- A faulty NOx sensor, or level and quality sensors
- Neglected filters
- A frozen system (below −11 °C if the heater is not working)
An emulator or a software solution removes the symptom but does not fix the physical cause. If you want the vehicle to run reliably long term, have the actual fault diagnosed first.
Legal Note
Emulators and software solutions that disable the AdBlue system are contrary to emissions regulations on road-going vehicles and will cause a failure at inspection. Such solutions are intended for racing, off-road and closed-course use. On a road vehicle the lasting and lawful fix is to genuinely repair the failed component.
