Ford coding is generally used in workshops to mean updating module configuration, as-built data, or parameter settings. Without the right hardware, the approach of "software unlocks every function" is not reliable.
Coding is different from ECU programming (flash). For flashing, see ford-ecu-programming and ford-j2534; for software context, ford-ids-fdrs.
Common methods
On the OEM path, IDS/FDRS + VCM (ford-vcm-ii, ford-vcm3) or J2534 Pass-Thru is used. Aftermarket devices support some configuration tasks; coverage varies by model.
Cautions
- Back up the existing configuration.
- Incorrect parameters can trigger a warning light or loss of function.
- Don't dismiss PATS/immobilizer procedures as "just coding" (ford-key-programming, ford-pats-error).

No. Flashing targets the software image; coding mostly targets configuration.
