Historical Development of Automobiles and How Repairs Are Done

What Is the Historical Development of Automobiles? How Are Automobile Repairs Performed?

Land vehicles have been part of our lives for more than a century. Although they were initially used for cargo transport in their early years, they have gradually become an indispensable part of daily life—especially in recent decades.

As vehicles became more common, breakdowns increased as well, and many products were developed to diagnose and resolve those faults.

One of the most critical—and most complex—failures is a fault in the engine control unit (ECU), the vehicle's most important electronic component.

Functions of ECUs

Engine control units have been used in automobiles for roughly 20 years. While they initially controlled only fuel injectors, today's ECUs can manage everything from the digital clock on the dashboard to rear-trunk lighting.

As a result, ECU fault diagnosis has become more difficult, more varied, and harder to repair.

Below we explain ECU fault detection, repair methods, and the tools used during the repair process.

ECU (Engine Control Unit) Repair Methods

When a fault is determined to be electronic rather than mechanical, the first step is to check the sensors and wiring controlled by the ECU.

Why isn't the ECU checked first?

Testing the ECU first would be faster and easier—but most workshops do not have equipment that can simulate or test the engine ECU before carrying out wiring, cable, and sensor checks.

After those checks confirm that the fault originates from the ECU, two repair paths are followed: software repair and hardware repair.

Software Repair

Software repair is possible when hardware changes have been made—such as a resolved DPF installation, speed-limit changes, software erased by voltage spikes, or adapting an ECU from another vehicle after total ECU loss.

For example: A flood-damaged vehicle needs a replacement ECU. The steps are:

Find an ECU with the same brand and part number.

Write the vehicle's immobilizer and software data to the replacement ECU. (For this we use the Magicmotorsport Flex tool.)

With the programmed ECU installed on the vehicle, perform adaptation and calibration of related components using an Autel or Launch diagnostic tool.

Hardware Repair

Due to voltage differences, short circuits, and physical damage from events such as flooding, the existing ECU can often be repaired without replacement.

As noted at the beginning, the traditional sequence is wiring, cable, and sensor checks first—then ECU repair.

ECU repair was limited by experience; unknown ECU damage could not be fixed, costing time, labor, and higher repair bills. If you have an ECUTEST KF-1500 to test the ECU, the steps are:

  • Remove the ECU from the vehicle, connect it to ECUTEST, and simulate it.
  • ECUTEST simulates the ECU, identifies the fault location, and reports details—for example, a MOSFET controlling injector No. 4 inside the ECU.
  • ECUTEST shows that injector No. 4 is not working and displays the MOSFET location with values and images.
  • Replace the faulty MOSFET with an equivalent part to complete ECU repair.

Some technicians also refer to this component as a transistor, MOSFET driver, or simply a driver.
