How to Clone a Renault EDC Transmission via OBD

How to Clone a Renault EDC Transmission via OBD

In manual vehicles, the torque converter determines how much power continues to the drivetrain. In semi-automatic and EDC transmission vehicles, there is no torque converter. The transmission itself shifts gears based on power from the engine. It automatically selects the right gear by optimizing road conditions, throttle input, and engine power, completing shifts with minimal jerk.

The operating principle can be summarized as follows: transmission gears mesh via synchronizers.

Each gear, connected to a clutch and moving on two splined shafts, is directed by commands from the system processor.

While one gear is engaged, the next waits in the upper clutch stage, enabling smooth shifts.

The "+" on the gear selector manually upshifts; the "-" manually downshifts. As on other automatic vehicles, "P" is park, "R" is reverse, and "N" is neutral on EDC transmissions.

What Are EDC Transmission Faults and Problems?

If the instrument cluster shows "check gearbox" or you scan faults with a professional diagnostic tool such as the Autel 908S Pro and receive one of the codes below, after confirming the sensor is not the cause you can try cloning the TCU with Flex.

  • P0705 Transmission range sensor, PRNDL input — circuit malfunction
  • P0706 Transmission range sensor — range/performance problem
  • P0707 Transmission range sensor — low input value
  • P0708 Transmission range sensor — high input value
  • P0709 Transmission range sensor — intermittent circuit
  • P0729 Gear 6 — incorrect ratio
  • P072B Transmission system — stuck in reverse
  • P072C Transmission system — stuck in 1st gear
  • P072D Transmission system — stuck in 2nd gear
  • P072E Transmission system — stuck in 3rd gear
  • P072F Transmission system — stuck in 4th gear
  • P0730 Incorrect gear ratio
  • P0731 Gear 1 — incorrect ratio
  • P0732 Gear 2 — incorrect ratio
  • P0733 Gear 3 — incorrect ratio
  • P0734 Gear 4 — incorrect ratio
  • P0735 Gear 5 — incorrect ratio
  • P0736 Reverse — incorrect ratio
  • P073A Transmission system — stuck in 5th gear
  • P073B Transmission system — stuck in 6th gear
  • P073C Transmission system — stuck in 7th gear
  • P073E Transmission system — cannot shift to 1st gear
  • P074A Transmission system — cannot shift to 2nd gear

How Is Cloning Performed?

FLEX is used for flash/EEPROM read-write and TCU cloning on automatic transmission ECUs in vehicles built after 2003.

It is especially used to code EDC, DSG, and transmission ECUs on Renault, BMW, Mercedes, Volkswagen, Audi, Seat, and Skoda vehicles.

TCU MANAGER loads raw software into ECUs and performs reprogramming.

Because automatic transmissions shift based on load and road conditions, carrying excess weight or constant stop-and-go city driving can cause transmission ECU faults over time.

Flex transmission coding and cloning tools resolve these faults and professionally reprogram the vehicle.

Together with the TCU Manager device that enables OBD programming, optional DC4, DSG DQ200, DQ250, and DQ500 OBD cables are available from our company.

DSG transmission coding and programming is performed with the Magicmotorsport Flex device.

When transmissions fail and need reprogramming, the Flex device from Magicmotorsport — dedicated to transmission ECUs — offers fast solutions. You can even program transmission ECUs via OBD with this device.
