What Is a Steering Angle Sensor?
The steering angle sensor (SAS) is an integral part of the vehicle's stability control system. It reports exactly where the steering wheel is and how fast it is being turned.
It does not work alone. Together with the accelerometer, wheel speed sensors and the yaw rate sensor, it tells the ABS/ESP control unit two different things: what the driver is asking the car to do, and what the car is actually doing. When those two disagree — the driver is steering one way but the vehicle is travelling another — the stability control system intervenes with individual brake application and torque reduction to help the driver regain control.
Analog and Digital Steering Angle Sensors
- Analog sensors operate on a 5 volt supply with a chassis ground and a signal output. As the wheel is turned through its full travel the sensor produces a signal that varies between 0 and 5 volts. The control unit uses that voltage difference to calculate both the angle and the rate of rotation.
- Digital sensors are fitted to most modern vehicles and transmit steering position as a data message rather than a varying voltage.
When Does the Steering Angle Sensor Need Resetting?
Calibration is required after any work that changes the relationship between the steering wheel, the steering rack and the wheels:
- Wheel alignment
- Steering rack, column or clock spring replacement
- Suspension or tie rod work
- ABS/ESP control unit replacement or battery disconnection on some models
- An ESP, ABS or traction control warning light that will not clear
Three Ways to Calibrate a Steering Angle Sensor
The exact procedure varies between manufacturers and models, but there are three general methods.

How to Reset the Steering Angle Sensor with a Launch Diagnostic Tool
One of the tools best suited to this job is the Launch X-431 Pro4. The sequence is:
- Connect the tool to the vehicle's OBD2 socket.
- Identify the vehicle. Use Smart Diagnosis for automatic identification, or select the make and model manually.
- Open System Selection. Where the calibration lives depends on the manufacturer: on some vehicles the routine sits inside the ABS module, on others it is listed separately as SAS or Steering Assistance.
- Select Steering Angle Sensor Calibration from that menu.
- Follow the on-screen prompts. The tool guides you step by step — typically centring the wheel, turning fully to each lock and returning to centre.
- Confirm and verify. Clear any stored codes, then check live data to confirm the sensor reads 0° with the wheels straight ahead, and road test to make sure the ESP light stays off.
Points to Watch
- Do the alignment first. Calibrating the sensor before the geometry is correct simply teaches the system a wrong zero point.
- The vehicle must be on level ground with the wheels pointing straight ahead before you start.
- Check battery voltage. Calibration routines can fail or abort halfway on a weak battery.
- Verify with live data, not just the absence of a warning light. A sensor reading a few degrees off will still allow the light to go out but will degrade stability control response.
