VAG coding is the process of reading and changing the configuration of control units (often referred to as "long coding") in Volkswagen Group vehicles. The goal may be enabling functions suited to the hardware, matching after a unit replacement, or managing options.
Coding is not the same as ECU programming (flash). Details: vag-ecu-programming. On newer generations, vag-sfd-lock can restrict write access.
Common tools and methods
In independent workshops, the classic route is often VCDS (VAG-COM), while on the OEM side vag-odis + VAS interfaces are used. Comparison: vcds-vs-odis. For interface selection, vag-vas-5054 and, for DoIP, vag-vas-6154 come up.
Things to watch out for
- Without the hardware, coding alone will not create a function.
- A wrong flag can produce a warning light, a bus fault, or an unwanted side effect.
- Back up the existing code before the process; keep a rollback plan.
- On SFD-protected vehicles, do not attempt an unauthorized "unlock" — vag-sfd-lock.

Workshop notes
Experimenting with long coding without a backup makes rollback difficult. There is a particular risk of side effects on gateway and lighting flags.
When the write step requires authorization on SFD-protected vehicles, don't assume the device is "broken" — check the vag-sfd-lock context first.
