What Is a Diesel Particulate Filter Washing Machine?

The Diesel Particulate Filter is a filter placed in the exhaust system of diesel vehicles to remove or reduce particulate matter produced during combustion.

Particulate matter is one of the most dangerous components causing air pollution. These components entering the body through the respiratory tract can cause serious damage and loss over time.

Strict limitation of particulate matter has made diesel particulate filter use mandatory.

Particulate filters are found on some Euro 4 vehicles and on all Euro 5 and Euro 6 vehicles.

Visually similar to a honeycomb, the particulate filter traps harmful exhaust particulates and thus minimises air pollution.

Sometimes we see the DPF symbol on the instrument cluster; this may indicate that regeneration could not be completed.

Over time particulates in the filter increase and can cause clogging.

Pressure sensors then measure soot level in the filter, detect critical soot level and start regeneration.

In some cases the vehicle cannot complete regeneration and soot level prevents the engine from running efficiently. Then we see the Diesel Particulate Filter (DPF) symbol on the display.

When the DPF symbol appears, the vehicle should be run briefly at steady speed and high RPM so the engine sends more fuel and exhaust temperature rises. Rising exhaust temperature burns solid particulates and completes regeneration.

Sometimes high-RPM regeneration attempts fail. Then the DPF or engine fault light may stay on and the vehicle loses power. In that case take the vehicle to a workshop and perform regeneration with a diagnostic tool.

On newer diesel vehicles, if precautions are not taken the DPF may reach a state where even regeneration cannot clean it and filter replacement becomes necessary.

Diesel Particulate Filter clogs when:

• Low-quality fuel is used
• The vehicle is used for long periods in stop-start traffic
• The engine idles for long periods
• Incorrect oil is used

Trying to save on fuel without proper vehicle care can lead to much higher costs for us and our vehicles.
