What Is TPMS and What Does It Do?
These sensors communicate with the vehicle's TPMS module.
An indirect system typically uses the vehicle's ABS wheel-speed sensors to monitor tire pressure.
Autel MX sensors are designed for passenger cars, pickups, and light commercial vehicles. MX sensors cannot be used on heavy-duty vehicles.
AUTEL MX-sensors can replace wheel-mounted TPMS sensors, including original equipment (OE) and programmable universal sensors.
MX sensors can be programmed for about 98% of today's vehicles.
If you do not offer tire pressure sensor service, you are missing a major business opportunity.
All vehicles produced in America since 2007 are equipped with TPMS sensors.
Some luxury cars adopted this technology earlier; for example, Porsche has used TPMS since 1986.
Most of these systems use battery-powered sensors with a typical battery life of about six years; when the battery dies, the warning light comes on.
To clear the fault code, a new tire pressure sensor must be registered, installed, and the code cleared.
TPMS service is therefore essential on modern vehicles, and market potential grows with every new model released.
How is a TPMS sensor registered? What do you need?
Each tire pressure sensor has a unique ID that must be registered in the vehicle's TPMS module.
There are three TPMS registration methods:
1. Automatic registration: drive the vehicle for a set time at a specific speed
2. OBD registration: requires a TPMS tool connected to the vehicle OBD port to register the sensor ID in the ECU.
This procedure is common on Japanese, Korean, Chrysler, Fiat, Land Rover, and Jaguar vehicles.
3. Static registration: the new sensor ID can be taught without driving the vehicle.
The vehicle must be parked for this method.
This procedure is used on some GM, Ford, Nissan, and certain Chinese and Japanese models.
General Features of Autel TPMS Tools
• Check whether sensors are still working, read tire pressure and temperature, and view sensor battery life and ID.
• Perform manufacturer-specific sensor registration for all TPMS-equipped vehicles.
• On vehicles with OBD II TPMS, register sensor IDs/positions. About 30% of vehicles on the market require a tool for TPMS registration.
• Autel TS508 and TS608 support OBD registration and TPMS fault diagnosis.
• Replace and register MX sensors with Autel TPMS tools on up to 98% of Asian, European, and domestic vehicles.
