Alientech KESS3: BMW & Mini Bosch MDG1 "Locked" Now in Bench

Alientech has expanded KESS3 coverage with new BENCH protocols for Bosch MDG1 "Locked" control units used across the BMW Group. On the latest DDE8 (diesel) and DME8 (petrol) generations, the job can now be done directly from the ECU connector.

The real gain here is that the indirect methods previously required on these "locked" units are no longer necessary. As Alientech puts it, the procedure is now safer and more controlled: the unit is removed from the vehicle and taken to the bench, but it stays closed — the connection is made through its own connector.

What does "Locked" MDG1 mean?

From 2020 onward, Bosch introduced an additional read/write protection across the MDG1 family. Units carrying this protection are commonly referred to as "locked", and on the BMW side they correspond to the DDE8 (Digital Diesel Electronics, 8th generation) and DME8 (Digital Motor Electronics, 8th generation) families.

For a long time these were among the most demanding units in chip tuning: a standard Bench connection was not enough, and the unit had to be unlocked separately. In practice that meant either opening the case and working on the microcontroller, or shipping the unit to an unlock service — both adding time, risk and cost.

What changes with KESS3?

MethodOpening the unitNote
Boot / unlockRequiredCase opening and contact risk, work at microcontroller level
Unlock serviceUnit must be shipped; freight and waiting time
New KESS3 Bench protocolNot requiredDirect connection through the ECU connector

If you want to understand the fundamental difference between Bench and Boot modes, see our detailed article on the differences between Bench and Boot modes.

Supported Bosch MDG1 control units

  • Bosch MD1CP032 — diesel (DDE8)
  • Bosch MD1CS001 — diesel (DDE8)
  • Bosch MG1CS024 — petrol (DME8)
  • Bosch MG1CS049 — petrol (DME8)
  • Bosch MG1CS201 — petrol (DME8)

The list covers both diesel (MD1) and petrol (MG1) platforms; these units are built around Infineon Aurix TC298/TC299 class microcontrollers.

Which vehicles are covered?

Coverage focuses on BMW Group vehicles from model year 2021 onward:

  • BMW: a broad range from the 1 Series up to the X7 — compact models, sedans and high-performance SUVs included
  • Mini: Cooper and Clubman variants
  • Alpina: B3, B4, XD3, XD4

This list summarises the general scope. Because the same model year can carry a different control unit depending on equipment level, exact compatibility must be verified from the unit label.

Required hardware and licence

  • KESS3 device
  • CAR BENCH/BOOT activation
  • Active subscription (current Alientech Suite release)

The protocols and their technical documentation are available through Alientech Suite. Devices with an expired subscription keep working with their existing protocols, but will not see these new ones.

Flex or KESS3?

Bench support for this unit group also arrived on the Magicmotorsport Flex side a short while ago. In other words, the same MDG1 family can now be handled on two different platforms.

The choice usually comes down to the tool already in the workshop and its licence structure:

  • If you already own a KESS3 with an active CAR BENCH/BOOT activation, you can work on these units without buying additional hardware.
  • If you own a Flex, you can reach the same units over Bench with the relevant FLS licence.
  • If you are buying a new tool, base the decision on your target vehicle segment, the other protocols you need, and subscription cost.

Practical points to watch

  • Take a full backup before every job. Without the original file you have no way back.
  • Power quality is critical. Use a stable bench power supply with sufficient current; an interruption during writing puts the unit at risk.
  • Verify the unit label. The Bosch part number on the unit is decisive, not the vehicle model.
  • Do not tamper with emission systems. Disabling DPF, catalytic converters and similar emission hardware pushes the vehicle beyond legal emission limits and causes it to fail inspection.

You can also use our ECU file service to process the original file you have read, and review the whole chip tuning process in our chip tuning guide.

Frequently Asked Questions

Do I need to open the ECU for this protocol?

No. The job is done through the unit's own connector, so the case stays closed. The unit is still removed from the vehicle and taken to the bench — this is not an OBD solution.

Will I still need an unlock service?

Not for the five units listed. Other MDG1 variants outside this scope may still require indirect methods, which is why the unit number should be verified before starting.

Which activation is required?

CAR BENCH/BOOT activation for KESS3, plus an active subscription. We can check together whether your current activation covers these protocols.

Does it work on every BMW and Mini?

No. Coverage is limited to the listed MDG1 control units and the models that use them. The same model may carry a different unit at another equipment level, so verification is essential.

How do I renew my KESS3 subscription?

Nitro Bilişim supports subscription renewal and activation. Just get in touch with your device serial number.

Verdict

The "locked" MDG1 group has been one of the most time-consuming ECU families of recent years. With Bench solutions now available on both Flex and KESS3, working time and risk on these vehicles drop noticeably — a practical gain for workshops handling 2021-and-later BMW and Mini vehicles.
