Fiat Egea SGW: Device Reads But Won't Write

Fiat Egea SGW: Device Reads But Won't Write

Short answer: Your tool isn't faulty. The Security Gateway (SGW) module fitted to FCA vehicles from model year 2018 onward allows read requests from the OBD port but blocks write, erase, coding and adaptation requests from unauthorized tools. In Turkey this wall is hit most often on the Fiat Egea. There are two ways through: authorized access, or a 12+8 pin cable that bypasses the SGW module.

What does it look like in the shop?

Technicians usually blame the tool, but the pattern is very typical:

  • It connects to the car, sees the modules, reads fault codes fine
  • "Clear fault codes" doesn't clear them, or they come straight back
  • Any write-based operation — coding, adaptation, service reset, injector coding — gets rejected
  • The tool shows "no authorization", "access denied" or a similar warning
  • The same tool works fine on an older Egea

If this matches what you're seeing, the problem isn't the tool — it's access authorization to the vehicle. We covered what SGW is and why it's there in our SGW explainer.

Which vehicles have it?

Scope Status
FCA group overallFiat, Alfa Romeo, Jeep, Dodge, Chrysler, Ram from model year 2018 onward
Fiat Egea / TipoIndustry sources report SGW present in production after August 2022. Confirm per-vehicle via VIN.
Jeep Renegade, Fiat 500XSame architecture, same restriction

Note: model year and production year don't always match. You may see "2022 model but no SGW" or the reverse; the only reliable way to know is to check for the module on the vehicle itself.

Where does the module sit?

The SGW is a small box with two connectors: one 12-pin, one 8-pin. Its location varies by model year:

  • 2018–2019: to the right of and below the steering column
  • 2020 onward: behind the steering column, mounted on a welded bracket

Either way, the lower trim panel has to come off. Arguing whether a given car "has SGW or not" without actually seeing the module gets you nowhere.

Two paths: authorized access or the cable?

Criterion Authorized access 12+8 pin cable
How it worksThe tool/user is authorized on the manufacturer's side; the SGW stays in placeThe module's two connectors are unplugged, the cable bridges the line directly
InstallationNo physical intervention on the vehicleRequires panel removal, cable is taken out after the job
Tool dependencyYour tool must support that specific programTool-independent — works with any device connecting through OBD
Ongoing costRequires a subscription / account managementOne-time hardware purchase

In practice, the 12+8 cable is the more common route in Turkey. Which brands and tools currently have authorized access open here varies — we covered TOPDON's progress on this in our AutoAuth article and our VAG SFD article.

When the cable won't work

This part matters, because buying the wrong product wastes money: on some 2023-and-later vehicles the SGW isn't a separate box anymore — it's built into the body control module (BCM). These vehicles have no pair of connectors to unplug and bridge, so the 12+8 cable won't do anything.

So the order of operations is: check underneath the vehicle first. If you find a separate module with two connectors, the cable is your solution. If you don't, ask us before buying the cable.

Things to watch when installing

  • Don't touch the connectors without disconnecting the battery first
  • While the cable is connected, one of the vehicle's security functions is disabled; remove it as soon as the job is done — never hand the car back to the owner with the cable still installed
  • Don't leave it in place before a warranty-covered job
  • Only perform this with the vehicle owner's knowledge and consent

Frequently Asked Questions

Why won't the fault code clear on my Fiat Egea?

The Security Gateway module on post-2018 FCA vehicles blocks write and erase requests from unauthorized tools over the OBD port. Reading is unrestricted, so the tool appears to work, but the clear command doesn't go through.

Which Egea models have SGW?

Industry sources report SGW present in Egeas produced after August 2022. To know for certain, remove the panel below the steering column and check whether the module is physically present.

Does the 12+8 pin cable work on every Egea?

No. It works if the SGW exists as a separate module. On some 2023-and-later vehicles the SGW is built into the body control unit, so there's no connector pair to bridge and the cable isn't a solution there.

Is the cable tool-specific?

No. The cable removes the SGW module from the line; it doesn't matter which brand of tool is connected through the OBD port.

Can I leave the cable in the vehicle?

No, it shouldn't be left in. While it's connected, one of the vehicle's security functions is disabled. Remove it as soon as the job is finished.

Is it okay to permanently remove the SGW module?

No. The module is part of the vehicle's security architecture; permanently disabling it isn't something to do without the owner's knowledge, and it causes problems on the warranty side.

What tool do I need for coding and service reset on the Egea?

Once access is resolved, it comes down to your tool's coverage. For OEM-level work on the FCA side, wiTECH MicroPod 2 is the option; multi-brand shops use whatever diagnostic tool covers the relevant scope. We can point you to the right one based on your vehicle and job list.

Shop notes

Check underneath the vehicle before buying the cable; if there's no separate module, the cable won't help you.

The same brand may not have SGW on a different model; Egea has it, the older Doblo doesn't.

Don't mistake your tool's "no authorization" warning for a faulty device and send it in for service.

Once the access issue is resolved, the job goes back to normal diagnostics. Let's work out the right path together based on your vehicle and job list.

Not sure if your vehicle has SGW, or which solution fits your job? Ask our technical team — we'll check it together via VIN.
