An automotive diagnostic tool connects to the vehicle's onboard systems and reads what the control units have recorded: stored fault codes, live sensor values and, on professional equipment, the ability to command components directly.
Using one is straightforward. Getting a correct answer out of it is not — and that gap is where most of the cost in a workshop is either saved or lost.
Connecting the Tool
On passenger cars the OBD-II socket is a 16-pin connector, usually in the driver's footwell or near the centre console, sometimes behind a small cover. Ignition on, tool connected, and the device identifies the vehicle — either automatically from the VIN or through manual selection.
Heavy vehicles, construction machinery and agricultural equipment are different. They use manufacturer specific connectors and protocols, and a tool built for cars will not communicate with them at all.
Reading Is the Easy Part
Any tool will list the stored codes. What separates equipment is what happens next:

A basic reader stops at the first row. That is enough to know something is wrong, and rarely enough to know what.
Why the Code Is Not the Answer
A fault code names a circuit, not a faulty part. A code pointing at a sensor may be caused by the sensor, by its wiring, by its connector, by its supply voltage, or by the component the sensor is measuring behaving abnormally.
Replacing parts on the strength of a code alone is the single most common way both workshops and vehicle owners lose money: the part is bought, fitted, and the fault returns unchanged. Confirming the cause needs live data under load and measurement on the circuit — which is exactly what a capable tool is for.
Clearing Codes
Clearing a code removes the record, not the condition that created it. If the fault is still present the code returns, usually within a few drive cycles. On emissions related systems the readiness monitors also reset, which can mean the vehicle fails an inspection until they complete again.
Choosing the Right Tool
The tool should be chosen against the vehicles you work on and the operations you need to perform — not against the length of the feature list. Coverage on the makes you actually see matters more than a large number of makes supported on paper.
